Why Music Piracy is Good

I published this paper for a final at Pace University in New York City.

In the 20st century, there was only one way to purchase music. Listeners would head down to the record store purchase music on the only medium it could be distributed on. Vinyl, cassette, laser disks, and CDs were the sources of music for the general population. Now in the 21st century, we have a technology called the Internet that can distribute data a lot faster and cheaper than heading to a store. If there were a topic that has prodded at the hearts of the entertainment industry, especially the music industry, in the last 10 years, it would be the issue of piracy. Millions of people “illegally” download music on the Internet every minute, and it’s growing at an exponential rate. The industry claims it is killing innovation, causing loss of jobs, and destroying the future of music. However, music piracy, and the ability to transfer music online promote innovation with artists now having access to a medium only previously available to the privileged. It creates new opportunities for people to make their own music and get exposed, and launches the music industry on a global worldwide scale, allowing people from all around the world the chance to explore and listen to music they would have never heard a few years back.

My new laptop is here

Yeah it came. I spent a whole week or so before posting this to try it out, and I’ve come to the conclusion it’s absolutely awesome.

The design/build of it is even better than I thought, and is a strong pirce of machinery. And it’s FAST, very fast. It’s got enough power to bulldoze through everything. Screen is extremtly sharp, and what surprised me was it came with 1920 x 1200 resolution, when it said it was coming with 1440 x 900. Well, even better.

My old desktop is in pieces right now, ready to be sold/stored. She ran great, but this one trumps. YEEEE

Working on a new SwiftKit site

skteaser

Look it's a sample!

The current swiftkit.net site was done by a web designer we hired, and it’s decent, but quickly got old. I’ve decided to take on the project and making some good progress. I won’t give away it all so post a teaser. It isn’t much to look at, but I want to keep it a secret until it’s released. For now the entire layout is designed, rendered and positioned, just working with the CSS and HTML now however, which might take a bit. Don’t expect it live anytime soon, but it’s coming.

Oh, and my laptop got delivered. I just have to go pick it up in New York. August 1st is the day.

I BOUGHT a new laptop

Yes really. The order went through and it’s being shipped. I found a great deal on the Gateway P-7805u FX and went ahead and bought it. It is a desktop replacement, being 17″ wide screen, so I will sell my current desktop. It’s got a freaking powerful graphics card though which makes it a gaming laptop, which will help me with my Photoshop and such.

Should get it August 1st, can’t wait.

I’m buying a new laptop

I’ve always been a desktop-guy, never really had any use for a laptop. Had my HP media center for about 4 or 5 years now, and it’s held up surprisingly. But now that I’m doing more work out of home and wanting to change up my scenery a bit, I’ve found more of a desire to buy a laptop lately, and I have a lot of cash hanging around from work. So, what am I gonna get?

Lenovo IdeaPad u350

Lenovo IdeaPad u350

This thing. It’s beautiful. It caught my eye on Engadget a few months ago so I decided to watch it. Well, it was just released a few days ago, and I’ve made my decision to grab it.

The model I’m going to purchase has 320 GB HDD, 1.3 GHz core 2 duo (isn’t the most powerful yes), 4 GB RAM, 13.1″ HD widescreen. It’s shockingly cheap at $800 retail, but I’ve managed to find a coupon code giving me $175 off. Jesus. Sad thing is I won’t be able to pick it up until the end of August. It isn’t available for sale in Canada, so I have to ship it to my U.S address and pick it up when i go down there.

I can’t wait. I’m one smaaaart shopper. I’ll post pics later when I actually have it.

Edit: I chickened out. I got to the final order confirmation screen where I told myself the 13″ screen wasn’t big enough. Sigh, back to the drawing board.

New SwiftKit app icons

The old SwiftKit icon I did 3 years ago was getting quite..old. I decided to revamp it a bit, now with more size support. Now hopefully those Vista/dock users will get a bit less ugly resizing now.

I’ll probably hate them by the end of the week, oh well. The update should hopefully be pushed within the next day or so.
